Here’s a little tip from Louie that will no doubt help you catch a few more bass. Many times, (probably a lot more than you know), a bass will follow your lure all the way to the boat, only to turn around at the last second and blast off, usually as you’re lifting your bait out of the water preparing for your next cast. Most people think that once their bait gets away from the cover of the bonnets or other types of structure, that it’s time to just reel it on in and cast again. Try this, especially when using soft baits, such as plastic worms, creature baits and the like. As your lure approaches the boat, slow it down. Even to the point of stopping and letting it fall for a couple of seconds. Many times, this will trigger the strike from a curious bass following close behind your bait. This is exactly how he caught the bass in this photo.

Important: Make sure that your drag is not set too tight, because often when a strike occurs very close to the end of your rod like this, especially by a big fish, either the hook will pull out, or he will snap your line. (Also, maintain a good grip on your pole when doing this.)

VERY GOOD TIP !!!  Worked for me a number of times in both fresh, and especially saltwater.

Measure the fish, not with a ruler, but rather by the size of the smile on the angler's face.
