I spent a lot of time recently trying to get some water stains out of the carpet in my cabin's ceiling...leaks at the hatches and bolt throughs.  These stains are mildew and i have used every brand of carpet shampoo without success.  reluctant to try bleach because i will just be trading one stain for another...any suggestions

Have you tried some TSPP with mild detergent ? What about upholstery cleaner?
Carpet stain is a killer to fix. Take come bleach and using a ratio of 4 to 1 water to bleach and try a small area.
Good luck.

Vinegar and water works on mildew stains. Try using a blow dryer after a mild washing to dry the carpet quickly and lessen the water stains. No guarantees, but its worth a try in a small area to see if my idea works.
